My packing skills have come a LONG way over the past six years. By making smart outfit choices and using the right packing tools, I can pack everything into a piece of carry-on luggage for a week long trip to Boston in the winter, Hawaii, or a week long cruise in the Caribbean.

In June 2012 I took a 14 day trip to Europe and brought with me a 25″ suitcase, a 21″ carry-on, plus an overstuffed weekender bag. I over-packed beyond my own comprehension, and that became painfully clear when I arrived to Venice and the only way in and around was to climb up and over multiple bridges.

For all my trips, including Europe 2012, I used packing envelopes and cubes. They are incredibly helpful in keeping things organized in your luggage and makes it easy to find whatever you’re looking for. What comes hand in hand with these tools is packing smartly.

How I use each item shown above:

Packing tube >> bras and other undergarments

Packing cube >> pajamas and workout clothes

Packing envelope >> outfits, bathing suits and cover-ups

Monogrammed cosmetic bag >> jewelry organization (I use the cloth pouches my jewelry came in at the time of purchase to keep them organized)

Pill box >> keeps earrings, rings and delicate bracelets organized (placed in cosmetic pouch with other jewelry)

Travel toiletry bottles >> it’s more economical and eco-friendly to use and refill these bottles. I fill them with my preferred brand of sunscreen, hand soap (not a fan of bar soap) and my other favorite products.

Toiletry bag >> TSA approved size providing visibility to what’s inside

Zippered pouch >> makeup or electronics/cords/chargers

Leather luggage tag >> because sometimes, if you’re unlucky, overhead space is no longer available and your luggage tag and luggage are at the mercy of the baggage handlers and durability is key

22″ spinner carry-on >> I’m a soft-sided luggage lover and this one checks off all the boxes: generous exterior pockets (for easy access to toiletry bag), two zippered interior pockets, generously sized interior

After a few trips, I’ve figured out a system and a place for everything. It’s much like a game of tetris. Packing envelope(s) at the bottom all the way up to the packing tube(s) at the top. Take advantage of the hollowed spaces at the bottom of the luggage for thin items like sandals or flip flops or a scarf — the packing envelope will lay on top of those items.

Packing everything into carry-on luggage for trips long and short has become my preferred method for travel as it eliminates the wait time checking in luggage, waiting for luggage at baggage claim, and the risk of losing  your luggage.
