How to Store Outgrown Baby Clothes

George was born early (3.5 weeks) and on the smaller size (6 lbs 5 oz), neither of which I had planned for or expected. I had about 5 newborn outfits that I honestly didn’t think I’d use as I had assumed that I would deliver a 10 lb baby around 42 weeks gestation.

Fortunately, my sister-in-law had a ton of newborn clothes that she sent over because George was wearing them for about 2 months.

Today, at just over 4 months old, George has pretty much outgrown most of his 0-3 sized clothing as well, so in addition to all those tiny newborn clothes, the 0-3’s are getting packed up and stored as well as any smaller sized extra diapers leftover.

We live in a small one bedroom apartment with no extra storage space, so I need to be smart and organized about how I store his too-small clothes. I use the Maria Kondo approach to folding his current size clothes to maximize the space we have, and I also do that for storing them as well.

To keep things organized by size and type, I use Hefty brand plastic storage bags that you’d generally use for food but obviously you can use whatever brand you want. I purchased the gallon size as well as the jumbo size which is AMAZING! I love these bags because they are clear so you can see what is inside them and also because you can get the air out of them thus making them more compact. There are space bags available but they cost more and this lady is on a budget. I label each bag with “N” for newborn or “0-3” so I know exactly what size is in each bag, and as George outgrows his clothes I’ll continue to write each size on the bags.

All items get stored in a large plastic bin which we already had on hand and then stored in a closet. As more sizes are added I readjust them such that the largest size is on the bottom and the smallest size is on top.
