Diaper Changing Station Essentials

One of my mom goals for day-to-day life was to have a diaper station that is well stocked with everything within one arms reach. I keep most of the essential items corralled in a small rectangular wicker basket similar to the one I rounded up. What doesn’t fit in the basket is right next to it.

When George was a newborn and we were still learning how to properly and efficiently change a diaper, diaper changes were not easy. Namely because he had that gut wrenching newborn cry every time, and he was still healing so the diapers had to be put on just so so as not to irritate his skin. Somewhere around 6 or 8 weeks old or so he stopped crying during diaper changes, so that, coupled with having changed dozens of diapers at that point, I got into a good groove.

These days George seems to enjoy diaper changes and a little nakey time. His new trick though is to hold his legs as stiff as a board when I’m trying to change him so that always makes things super easy (not!).

To make diaper changes as quick and easy as possible I usually set up everything right before I set him down for a diaper change or just after setting him down and before getting him undressed. I get out a diaper and unfold it so it’s ready to go, get out the number of wipes I think we’ll need, get some diaper cream on our Bum Brush (seriously, this gadget is not unnecessary or a waste of money!) and then we are ready to go.

We use WaterWipes and they seem to be wetter than the Pampers Sensitive wipes we’ve used before and store them in this Ubbi wipe dispenser which prevents them from drying out. To dry his bum I usually dry out a few wipes, tear them in half and use them to dab away moisture. I’ve also used those little cotton hand mittens that never stay on to do the job as a more eco-friendly, less wasteful option; I figured, if I had them I may as well try to use them in some way.

For easy restocking, I keep extra changing pad liners and diapers in the top drawer of his dresser/changing table combo that we purchased from Pottery Barn Kids. I love the look of the piece and it’s well constructed which includes dovetail drawers. My only complaint is that the drawers don’t pull out all the way making it challenging to see and access items at the back of the drawer.

The last item that has been a real winner in the diaper changing department is our Ubbi diaper pail which 100% contains all odors. I’ll put it outside for a hours in between changing out the bag (which, by the way, you can use any trash bag) and let it air out.
