18 Must-Have Newborn Baby Essentials

The number of baby products out there is both amazing and overwhelming. There is seemingly a product for everything. But what do you really, really, need those first few months?

My son, George, just turned three months old. I can’t stop saying and thinking that time goes by so quickly!

When I was pregnant (and even when I wasn’t but was hoping to be), I spent a lot of time researching which products we’d need and really enjoyed reading what other moms had to say based on their personal experience. I thought it would be fun to share which products we’ve regularly used during the first three months of George’s life.

UPPAbaby Vista – this stroller is by far the best investment we made, and it is certainly an investment especially when you factor in the add-on items (i.e. snack tray, cup holder). The Vista is high quality, sturdy, strolls and pivots smoothly and is multi-functional, plus it has the capacity to grow with your family.

The UPPAbaby Vista comes with a bassinet which I was most excited about. In addition to using the bassinet on our daily strolls around town, we also use this as George’s primary bed at night. We purchased the bassinet stand and the bassinet easily snaps into the stand just as it does the stroller.

Not pictured is the UPPAbaby Mesa car seat which we actually purchased after having originally purchased the Maxi Cosi Mico Max 30 with the UPPAbaby adapters. The Mesa should have been what I purchased originally, but alas, it wasn’t, but now that we have it, it’s so much easier to use!

SwaddleMe Swaddles – if it weren’t for these swaddles, I don’t know what I’d do at night. These are so easy to use and keep George’s arms secure and snug throughout the night.

Skip Hop Farmstand Play Mat – this was a gift from my sister, and we absolutely love it! George loves swatting at the avocado and tomato and spends a lot of time each day either looking at the hanging fruits and vegetables or doing tummy time.

Aden + Anais Bandana Bibs – we use this daily to catch spit up and other forms of dripage from his mouth. Since he is getting bigger and these don’t cover up half his body we are also starting to wear them during feedings. They are soft and absorbent.

Comotomo Bottles – I almost exclusively pump, so we’ve been using these bottles daily. There are only 3 components to each bottle and they are super easy to clean. I ordered more of the 8 oz. size as opposed to the smaller 5 oz. size since they will give us the most use in the long run.

OXO Bottle Drying Rack – our kitchen is small, so we needed to take advantage of the vertical space beneath the upper cabinets. This has been a great space saving drying rack. We also have the small Boon lawn drying rack for pump parts and Comotomo parts.

Wubbanub Pacifier – well these are just adorable. George doesn’t have an attachment to a pacifier, but sometimes when he’s really fussy he’ll take one and soothe himself to sleep.

Boppy Noggin Nest – from the start I was pretty concerned about George getting a flat head. I purchased two of these and use them all the time. This seems to work well. We use it when George is playing on his play mat or strolling around town in his bassinet.

Ubbi Diaper Pail – what dirty diapers? This pail works great at keeping the odor virtually non-existent from an incredible number of diapers a baby goes through in a short period of time.

Baby Bum Brush – after a minor diaper rash when he was super little, I started using this awesome gadget during each diaper change to apply diaper cream.

Not pictured, but for diapering, we use Boudreaux’s Butt Paste, Pampers Swaddlers and Water Wipes. We use this changing pad, this quilted cover and these liners because accidents do indeed happen.

Sleep ‘N Play One Piece – these particular sleep ‘n plays are amazing for three reasons. 1. They zip UP from the ankle making diaper changes super easy and less chilly for baby. 2. they have mittens that fold over baby’s hands (let’s be honest, those other little mittens, albeit cute, do not stay on). 3. a pack of three is only $12.99! They come in a bunch of cute designs, too.

Boppy Newborn Lounger – I’m trying to figure out what we’ll do once George get’s too big for this. He absolutely LOVES this lounger. We also have the Dock-a-Tot which he promptly decided he didn’t like after only a few weeks of life. The lounger is way more comfortable to hang out in and, under my supervision, he also very much enjoys napping in it, too.

Dohm Sound Machine – we use this every night and keep it on the floor right by his bassinet.

Aden + Anais Swaddle Blankets – these are great for a lot of reasons. We use them as a protective layer over the Boppy Newborn Lounger and we also use them as blankets. In the early days when the SwaddleMe Swaddle’s were too big for George, we used these blankets as swaddles too, but it was hard to consistently get a tight enough swaddle that would keep his arms from escaping.

DermaFrida – George had a bit of a dry scalp so this worked well to slough off any dead skin while we were shampooing. Plus it acts a bit like a head massager, so no complaints from him!

Burt’s Bees Washcloths – these as well as the Carter’s brand are great. They are super soft, suds up really well and are small enough to navigate around and under those tiny little armpits and hard to reach crevices.

Skip Hop Whale Tub – I really didn’t want to get a baby bathtub, particularly because our bathroom is tiny and we wouldn’t have anywhere to put it (it now permanently resides on the bathroom vanity). I’m glad we got it though because it saves my back and makes bathing George super easy! It’s also adjustable so it can grow with baby.

Little babies comes with lots of stuff, and I hope this gave you some insight into what you might need.

I’ll be putting together a post on things that I have found to be essential in my first few months of motherhood as well as another post with some of the things that helped get me through my pregnancy.
