I’ve come across several retailers that also refer to their cane products as rattan. Why? Cane is made from the outer layer of rattan stalk and has been around since the mid 1600’s! For anything to be popular hundreds of years later, you know it just has to be a good thing!

Cane adds an elegant touch to furniture while keeping things light and airy. It can be used in a formal setting without appearing too stuffy. If you happen to have animals (specifically cats) like me, you might prefer a caned dining chair over an upholstered chair as there are two givens with cats: 1. cat hair, and 2. cat claws and the occasional “oops, I forgot that the chairs were not scratching posts!” situations. If you have a chair with a caned seat or back, it’s a bit more forgiving on your body than a solid wood or metal chair would be, so you still get some of the similar comforts of an upholstered chair.
